What’s new in Narrative

• Zoom minimap. When zoomed in on the main image, you'll now see a minimap that makes it easier to navigate around the image and adjust your zoom level.
• Invert filters with a modifier key. Hold Command (macOS) or Control (Windows) while clicking a filter to show all images except that filter.
• Editable crop level. The crop panel's level value is now an editable text field for more precise adjustments.
• Easier selection management. You can now remove the currently focused image from a selection by holding Command (macOS) or Control (Windows) and clicking its thumbnail.
• Simpler Key People management. We've made it easier to rename Key People and configure their settings.

• Fixed a regression affecting the main rating selector.
• Fixed an issue where very large projects could take significantly longer than expected to scan.
• Fixed an issue where Lightroom could, in some situations, fail to import all images from a Ship.

• Faster zoomed-in navigation. We've further improved image rendering performance when moving between images at 100% zoom, making image-to-image navigation feel even more responsive.
• Instant scene-to-scene navigation. Narrative now preloads nearby scene covers, helping scene navigation feel faster and more immediate.
• Even faster startup times. We've continued improving launch performance so you can get into your projects even more quickly.
• Smarter imports into existing projects. When ingesting into an existing project, Narrative now loads all images in the project, not just the newly imported ones. This makes workflows involving multiple memory cards or second shooters more seamless and ensures your full shoot is always available.

• Fixed inverted loading states in the People Filter and Image Focus filters.
• Fixed an issue where project progress could appear stuck at 99% after scanning had completed.
• Fixed an issue where clicking a face in Close-ups would zoom to the centre of the subjects face, rather than where you clicked.
• Fixed an issue where the ingest tab spinner could become compressed when using long project names, and corrected shoot-type icon positioning.
• Fixed an "Images failed to edit" error.
• Fixed an issue that could cause scene scanning to stall in some circumstances.

• Key People. Building on the recently released People Filter, Narrative can now identify the people most likely to be the Key People in your shoot. When enabled, Key People are highlighted in the Close-ups panel with a blue icon and frame on hover, making them easier to spot at a glance. Particularly useful for weddings, events, and other shoots with lots of people. (Releasing first on Apple Silicone + macOS 14+)
• Automatic shoot type detection. Narrative now automatically detects the type of photoshoot you're importing, making projects easier to organise and browse. We'll continue expanding support for additional shoot types over the coming months. (Automatic detection releasing first on macOS 14+)

• Faster startup times. Narrative now launches significantly faster, helping you get into your projects more quickly.
• Further scene detection improvements. We've continued refining scene grouping. You should see fewer overly large scenes and fewer unnecessary scene splits. (Releasing first on Apple Silicone + macOS 14+)

• Fixed an issue where the People Filter could occasionally fail to detect any people.
• Fixed an issue where Smart Zoom might not zoom to the most central face in an image.
• Improved the reliability of collecting corrections for your Personal AI Preset.
• Fixed an issue when importing RAW + JPEG projects where the app could display the smaller embedded RAW preview instead of the larger companion JPEG.

• People Filter (Beta) allows you to filter your shoot by one person, or any combination of people. See coverage at a glance, focus your sneak peaks on the key people and make your selection more confidently.
• AI First Pass now rates photos without people. Until now, First Pass focused on shots with faces. Now, for scenes with no one in them — landscapes, details, venue and decor — Narrative ranks them by sharpness, picking out the crispest frame and flagging the soft ones, so your first pass covers the whole shoot in more detail.
• HEIC support — what the HEIC! Photos straight off your iPhone now open in Narrative, no conversion needed.

• Faster imports. Your shoots load and start analysing noticeably quicker.
• Smoother previews. Thumbnails render faster as you move through a shoot.
• Lighter updates. App downloads and updates are smaller and quicker.
• Polish. Clearer scene tooltips, more consistent pop-up dialogs, and a "Preview" label on preset cards.

• The Ship dialog now closes when you click outside it.
• Your last viewed image is remembered reliably.
• Fixed an image counter that could read more than the total (e.g. 381/380).
• Delete no longer drops you out of Fullscreen.
• The Close-ups panel closes properly when a filter leaves nothing to show.
• Tidied up toolbar hover states and toast timing.

• Close-ups for images without faces (macOS only). In the Close-ups panel, images with no detected faces will now show a crop of the key element instead, such as an animal, object, or person facing away from the camera.
• Fullscreen Mode. View your images distraction-free at full size with only the ratings bar and face assessments visible. Press f to enter or exit Fullscreen Mode, or press esc to exit.
• Batch cropping. Apply a crop, level, and/or aspect ratio to multiple images at once, including selected images, the current scene, or all landscape or portrait images. Open the crop panel with c and click [Batch Apply…].
• In-app release notes. You can now view the latest release notes anytime from Help → What’s New.

• Cropping now preserves your selected aspect ratio when switching between landscape and portrait orientations.
• Notifications are now capped so you won’t be overwhelmed by repeated actions like deleting many images quickly.
• The updater now waits longer before prompting again if you choose [ASK ME LATER].

• Restored the macOS hide window shortcut: ⌘ h.
• Fixed an issue where the project home screen sort order was not being remembered.

• Auto-rate with First Pass. Automatically apply a metadata rating (for example, star ratings or color labels) based on AI First Pass image assessments. Find it in Photo → Auto-rate with First Pass.

• Batch switch AI Presets in Lightroom. If you’ve shipped multiple AI Presets, you can now toggle between them in bulk. In Lightroom, select your images, then go to File → Plug-in Extras → Sync Snapshots to switch all selected images to a different AI Preset in one go.

• You can now have the Crop panel and Close-ups open at the same time.

• Crops are now saved immediately after clicking Done or Reset.

• Double-clicking the crop level slider resets it to 0.

• Middle-click now closes a project tab.

• Image numbers now appear when hovering over images in Loupe or Grid View.

• Fixed an issue where neighbouring scenes shot in burst mode could become jumbled.

• Fixed an issue with multi-Preset where corrections could be applied to the wrong AI Preset.

• Fixed an issue with capture-time renaming for AM photos. Leading zeros are now included so filenames sort correctly (e.g. 8.30.12am → 083012).

• Fixed an issue in advanced filters where individual items couldn’t be easily toggled off after being enabled.

• Fixed an issue where the Preset homepage could show duplicate “More” menus.

• Fixed an issue where the blue highlight in Scenes View appeared every project. It now shows only once.

• AI First Pass settings. Control how selective AI is when assessing your images, from Ruthless to Cautious. This never deletes photos or makes selections. Find it in Preferences → Assessments → AI First Pass.Onboarding progress and preferences now syncs across devices. Your onboarding preferences stay consistent anywhere you’re signed in.
• Narrative en Español. Our first Spanish version is now available! By default Narrative will use your system default language, but you can also select from Preferences → Assessments → Language
• Optional preview uploads to improve features. You can now opt in to automatically upload image previews to help us improve the app. You can turn this off anytime. Images are used only for product improvement in accordance with our Terms and Conditions and are never shared externally.

• Quick Import modal polish. Added session end times and improved the session time gap controls.
• Better Quick Import triggering. The Quick Import modal now appears when you create a new project, choose “Copy images from a memory card to a computer or hard drive,” and a memory card is already connected.

• Black and White Presets are here! Four new free black & white AI Presets are availble for unlimited use on Standard plans and above. And, If you're on the Premium or Ultra plans you can also train your very own black & white AI Presets!

• Improved the clarity and ordering of AI Preset cards.

• Fixed an issue where some ingests (copying from memory cards) could stall just before finishing.

• Faster file copying from memory cards.

• AI Preset creation is now more reliable and better reflects your recent work.

• One-click quick import: When you plug in a memory card, our new Quick Ingest tool automatically groups your photos into 'sessions' – photos taken on the same day with no more than a 2-hour gap. Meaning, you can pick the right files to back up, and start a new project in just a couple of clicks. (Rolling out over the coming weeks.)

• Manual AI Training: You’re in the driver’s seat. If our automatic preset training isn't quite hitting the mark, you can now manually select specific catalogs to train your AI Preset.

• Expanded Camera Support: We’ve added support for the latest Sony and Fujifilm models.

• Improved scene grouping. The grouping of scenes is now more accurate.

• More time to update: We’ve extended the auto-update restart timer to 2 hours, giving you plenty of time to wrap up your current task before the app refreshes.

• Lightroom stability: Fixed a bug that caused Lightroom to occasionally stall when processing multiple AI Presets at once.

• This style brings out warm, sun-kissed tones and soft vintage grain, evoking the magic of timeless memories - like discovering an old roll of film tucked away in your nan’s closet. This style was proudly created by Eilish Burt for Unscripted + Narrative.

• Faster Face and Image Assessment scanning.

• Changing the photo renaming formula inside a project now updates your default formula.

• Added an Original filename option when renaming images.

• After moving or copying photos, you can open the destination folder directly in Finder or Explorer.

• You can now see which folder a photo lives in from the Shot Info panel.

  • Decide how your First Pass Image Assessments and Scene Ranking show up  – full color, minimal color, or none.

• We fixed some filters that were misbehaving.

• We've made the biggest improvment to the way we caluclate scenes in years. If you have the new version should see a vast improvement in the quality of the scenes constructed. Note: we're rolling this out over several weeks so you might not get this update straight away.
• AI Preset creation feels far more seamless now. Once you've intiatied training, it now takes place largely in the background. You can track progress by clicking on the icon in the very top toolbar.

Lightroom CC support for AI Presets

We’re excited to announce that Narrative’s editing features now integrate with Lightroom CC!

After culling, choose to pre-edit your selection in one click as you Ship direct to Lightroom CC. Your images will appear in Lightroom pre-edited with the AI Preset of your choice – ready for you to add your finishing touches.

You can use it offline, and there’s no need to upload images or catalogs to apply your edits.

• After you Ship and pre-edit you'll see a summary of how many images have been auto-straightened (free with Narrative!)
• If you train a new AI Preset it will be automatically selected for you to use when Shipping.

• We’ve added a summary to the end of your projects, featuring stats about your project, such as, what percent of images you rated and your average image focus score. Just scroll to the very last thumbnail of your project in Loupe or Scenes View to see yours!

• Renamed "Styles" to "AI Presets"

• Set custom keyboard shortcuts. Head into 'Preferences', then 'Keyboard Shortcuts' to change the shortcut key for most shortcuts in the app.
• You can now toggle auto-level off and on from the Ship modal. As a reminder, auto-level (automatic straightening of your photos to align to the horizon, or prominent architecture) is free with Narrative!
  
• We're rolling out the ability to skip straight to the Ship+Edit modal when you create a new project if you're ready to Ship+Edit without culling first.

• When you train a new Personal AI Preset, or use an AI Preset – only one instance of Adobe DNG Converter will pop-up.
• You can now rename your AI Presets directly from the Preview screen.

• Fixed an issue where Narrative could show a blank screen if you're payment method was expired or unavailble.

• Videos will now play directly inside the app

Style builder improvements:

• We'll now check up-front if you have enough images to create a Personal Style, and advise you to plug in external drives if not.
• When detected, external drives will be automatically scanned when entering the Style builder.
• While creating a Style, you can switch tabs without losing your selection or settings.
• Draft Styles are no longer saved if you close the tab before progressing to upload.

• You can now drag and reorder tabs.
• Your credit balance is now displayed in the super-nav.
• Personal Stlye and Artist/Narrative Styles are now seperated on the Style home page.
• More prominent call-outs to create a Personal Style across the Ship modal, Style home and Style Previews.

• Fixed a 'Select All' bug on the Style builder screen.

• Greatly improved editing consistency. Similar images should now be edited far more consistently, as well as an overall improvment to the quality of editing.

• Narrative's tags (t) and rejects (x) can now be read by Lightroom. (Tags will show as flags)
• After you train a Style, you are now directed to the Style Preview screen so you can see the results right away. You can easily access Add Images and Review Images from this screen too.

• You can now move or copy directly from the Ship modal!

• It's now much easier to apply a Style via the Style Preview screen. When you click on 'USE THIS STYLE' you'll be able to open a project directly, and that Style will be selected and ready to use.

• There is a brand new Narrative Free Style! – Modern True Tone.
• Added an info dot on Personal Style cards. Hover over to see:
  • The current version of your Style.
  • When it was created or last updated.
  • How many images and corrections are included in your Style.
• Shift + Home and Shift + End select all images from your current selected image to the first or last image in the project.

• Styles are now sorted more consistently accross the various parts of the app.
• Disk space is now calculated before a move or copy operation in order to determine if it would successfully complete or not.

• Fixed an issue where right-clicking while having multiple images selected could cause you to loose your selection.

• Personal Styles now receive before and after preview images – so you can easily see what your Style looks like. Older Personal Styles will get preview images the next time your Style gets updated (add some more images, or make some corrections!)

  First Pass is our vastly improved AI-powered culling assistant that saves you heaps of time by getting you to your best photos, faster.

  Think of First Pass as your junior culling assistant. They added one of three labels to your photos – potential picks, unlikely picks and undesirable picks. 

  If you’re in a hurry, you can save heaps of time by hiding everything except potential picks and just looking through those. In most cases you’ll pick something from these. If you have more time to hand you could also quickly check the unlikely picks in case you didn’t find what you wanted from the potential picks. It’s highly unlikely you’d pick something with the undesirable picks label, so you can safely ignore these (unless you know you were trying to shoot something weird or arty that First Pass doesn’t understand).

  First Pass doesn’t do your culling for you, it’s an assistant – you are still the creative, artistic expert here. Ultimately, you have the final call.

• Sort by "Scene rank" & "Scene time" on Loupe and Grid Views

But, if no faces are detected the Close-ups panel will automatically switch to Pan Mode. You can toggle to Pan Mode at any time, and you’ll stay in Pan Mode until you move to a new scene where faces have been detected.

Scenes view

• In scenes view, similar images are grouped into ‘scenes’ – they’re great for giving you a quick overview of your project, and letting you navigate faster.
• You can order images within each scene by capture time, reverse capture time and Image Assessment rank.
• With Image Assessment rank order, the worst images are put at the bottom of each scene – so you can find the best image faster and move on to the next scene!
• You can now filter to show only images with strong or moderate Image Assessment warnings. Just open the filters in the toolbar.

• Fixed a bug where zoom wasn't working as expected

• New streamlined filtering. By default, we’ll now only show star and Image Assessment filters. If you apply a color or tag rating to an image, those filter types will appear automatically. Or, you can click the three dots in the filters section to switch filter types on and off.
• We’ve integrated advanced filters (camera/serial, lens and date) with the rest of the filters in the toolbar. (Note: these will no longer appear in the utility panel.) Click the three dots in the toolbar filters to activate them.

They’re like Distill, but they show up automatically!

• Yellow hexagons tell you that you might find better images in that scene.

• You can then use the filters in the toolbar to hide images with Image Assessment warnings.
• From preferences, you can choose to turn off just the yellow Assessments, or turn off Image Assessments altogether.

• If multiple images are taken within the same second we now show them in the correct order as long as the filenames are sequentially numbered
• Pressing 0 (clear rating) now auto-advances
